Church of Portuincula Etawah
HISTORY

The Catholic mission came into existence in 1967. Fr. Lawrence, OFM Cap., the then Vicar General of Agra Archdiocese took the initiative to start a mission here. Both the Capuchin and the IMS Fathers have worked here till 1975. Meanwhile, the SMA Sisters started a primary school at Etawah in 1967. In 1974, the then Archbishop of Agra, Most Rev. Dominic Athaide invited the priests of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry. Fr. Kuruvilla Kokkatt and Fr. Jose Poovathinkal, reached Agra on May 1st, 1975 and were sent to Etawah. The SMA Sisters who started the school in 1967, handed over the school to the Archdiocese of Changanacherry. The Primary School then handed over is now St. Mary’s Inter College. The Sisters of the CMC Congregation of the Mount Carmel Province of Bhopal assist the Priests of Changanacherry in the activities of the Centre.
